I checked out my blog stats for the first time ever the other day and the results surprised me.
I've always thought that as a community of book lovers, it would be the posts about other writers novels that would prove popular - but I was wrong, very very wrong!
My blog posts that gain the most comments and page views are actually the ones where I talk about my own personal journey, especially the ones where I admit to struggling. Now that makes you lot a bunch of narcissists, or actually a bunch of writers who really identify with what I've gone through. Going by the comments, I would say it was definitely the latter.
Book review posts are actually the least viewed. Which asks the question: are we actually interested in the end product, or the journey to get there?
My short pithy God-I'm-So-Funny-How-Do-I-Not-Have-My-Own-TV-Show posts are also popular, but the ones where I give advice? Not so much!
I remain staggered though by the numbers of people who view the blog which is well into the thousands, and my country tracker tells me I have readers in Russia, China, India - and apparently I am very popular in Pakistan!
It was humbling going through the stats, but it will help me with my planning of blog posts during 2012.
Thanks to you for continuing to bother with my little blog!

Oh how fun that your blog is popular in Pakistan! Yay! That's just excellent!! Good luck with focusing your blog based on these readings!! So long as you are enjoying it all!
I don't even look at my stats (don;t know where they are!). I just blog away whatever!
Take care

Reminds me to go check on my analytics. Been way too long, and they're always such interesting stats. :)
I've found that I really do prefer to read journey blogs over book reviews. I'm all for learning about a new great book to check out, but in that constant struggle to read what you write, sometimes writing wins. And based on my place in this crazy journey we call "Writing," that's the best place to be. If I can read how others get through the "saggy middle" of their careers, I feel more compelled to keep going.
And thanks for the reminder to check my stats! :)
Oooo, Donna. I've looked at locations of posts, but I haven't looked at my stats as they relate to post topics. Hmmm...
I think I know where at least one of the China people is. My sons says he loves your blog. =D
After two years of blogging, I've figured out what gets views and comments and what doesn't. Right now some of my most popular posts involve the monthly Insecure Writer's Support Group posts. Maybe writers do like watching others suffer!
Your personal journey posts are really compelling. I guess that is why they're popular.
Donna, your son is so nice to bother reading my witterings!
I try not to look at my stats, but when I do, I notice the exact same thing. It'the personal side that people tend to prefer. So here's more talking about us! :)
We all love a peek into other's lives. It's instinctive to make comparisons, and know that we all share similar highs and lows.
Interesting! That makes sense to me, actually; "human" posts are going to be interesting as so many of us will identify with them.
I really must check my stats some time ...
